Janam Ratan Jini Khatiya - by Guru Arjan Dev Ji

"Janam Ratan Jini Khatiya" is the first line of a beautiful and profound shabad by Guru Arjan Dev Ji, the fifth Sikh Guru. It's found in the Guru Granth Sahib on Ang 661.

Meaning in essence:

This shabad highlights the actions and qualities of those who truly benefit from human life. It speaks of earning the precious gift of life by performing good deeds, serving the True Guru with devotion, meditating on God's name, practicing humility, seeking inner wisdom, and serving the holy. Guru Arjan Dev Ji says that those who do these things attain spiritual liberation and experience the divine bliss of the Lord. ਜਨਮੁ ਰਤਨੁ ਜਿਨੀ ਖਟੀਆ ॥
जनमु रतनु जिनी खटीआ ॥
Janam ratan jinee khatteea ||
Those who have earned the jewel of this human life,

ਕਰਮੁ ਧਰਮੁ ਜਿਨੀ ਕੀਆ ॥
करमु धरमु जिनी कीआ ॥
Karam dharam jinee kee-aa ||
And have performed righteous actions and deeds of Dharma,

ਜਿਨੀ ਸਤਿਗੁਰੁ ਸੇਵਿਆ ਭਾਉ ਕਰਿ ॥
जिनी सतिगुरु सेविआ भाउ करि ॥
Jinee satigur sevi-aa bhaa-o kar ||
Those who have served the True Guru with love and devotion,

ਹਰਿ ਹਰਿ ਨਾਮੁ ਜਿਨੀ ਧਿਆਇਆ ॥੧॥
हरि हरि नामु जिनी धिआइआ ॥੧॥
Har har naam jinee dhi-aa-i-aa ||1||
And have meditated on the Name of the Lord, Har, Har. ||1||

ਜਿਨੀ ਸਾਧੂ ਚਰਣ ਪਖਾਲੇ ॥
जिनी साधू चरण पखाले ॥
Jinee saaDhoo charan pakhaale ||
Those who have washed the feet of the Holy,

ਜਿਨੀ ਗੁਰੁ ਗੋਪਾਲੁ ਧਿਆਇਆ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
जिनी गुरु गोपालु धिआइआ ॥੧॥ रहाउ ॥
Jinee gur gopaal dhi-aa-i-aa ||1|| rahaau ||
And have meditated on the Guru, the Sustainer of the world. ||1||Pause||

ਜਿਨੀ ਗਰੀਬੀ ਧਨੁ ਸਮਝਿਆ ॥
जिनी गरीबी धनु समझिआ ॥
Jinee gareebee Dhan samjhi-aa ||
Those who have understood that humility is true wealth,

ਜਿਨੀ ਅੰਤਰਿ ਗਿਆਨੁ ਧਿਆਇਆ ॥
जिनी अंतरि गिआनु धिआइआ ॥
Jinee antar gi-aan dhi-aa-i-aa ||
And have meditated on spiritual wisdom within their hearts,

ਜਿਨੀ ਮਨ ਕੀ ਮੈਲੁ ਉਤਾਰੀ ॥
जिनी मन की मैलु उतारी ॥
Jinee man kee mail uthaaree ||
Those who have washed away the filth of their minds,

ਹਰਿ ਹਰਿ ਰਸੁ ਜਿਨੀ ਚਾਖਿਆ ॥੨॥
हरि हरि रसु जिनी चाखिआ ॥੨॥
Har har ras jinee chaakhi-aa ||2||
They have tasted the sublime essence of the Lord, Har, Har. ||2||

ਜਿਨੀ ਸੰਤ ਜਨਾ ਕੀ ਸੇਵਾ ਕੀਨੀ ॥
जिनी संत जना की सेवा कीनी ॥
Jinee sant janaa kee sevaa keenee ||
Those who have served the Saints,

ਜਿਨੀ ਹਰਿ ਹਰਿ ਕਥਾ ਸੁਣੀ ॥
जिनी हरि हरि कथा सुणी ॥
Jinee har har kathaa sunee ||
And have listened to the stories of the Lord, Har, Har,

ਜਿਨੀ ਅੰਮ੍ਰਿਤ ਨਾਮੁ ਛਕਿਆ ॥
जिनी अम्रित नामु छकिआ ॥
Jinee amrit naam chhaki-aa ||
Those who have partaken of the Ambrosial Nectar of the Naam,

ਜਨ ਨਾਨਕ ਤਿਨ ਬਲਿਹਾਰੀ ॥੩॥੨॥
जन नानक तिन बलिहारी ॥੩॥੨॥
Jan Naanak tin balihaaree ||3||2||
Servant Nanak is a sacrifice to them. ||3||2||
